Cleveland Clinic has named Sunil K. Srivastava, MD, as the new chair of the Cole Eye Institute, the health system announced. Dr. Srivastava, a vitreoretinal surgeon and uveitis specialist, has been with the institution for more than 2 decades, where he also serves as program director for the medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship programs.
A graduate of Cornell University and the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, Dr. Srivastava completed training at the National Eye Institute and Duke University. His research has focused on imaging biomarkers in ocular inflammation, intraoperative imaging, and artificial intelligence–based image analysis. He has authored more than 325 peer-reviewed publications, holds 11 US patents, and has trained more than 170 residents and fellows.
Under his leadership, the Cole Eye Institute’s uveitis service has grown into an international referral center, collaborating across specialties such as rheumatology, oncology, and infectious disease. His contributions have been recognized with awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Cleveland Clinic. Most recently, he received the 2025 Crystal Apple Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists in recognition of his mentorship.
Dr. Srivastava succeeds Daniel F. Martin, MD, who chaired the institute from 2008 to 2024 and oversaw a period of significant growth, including faculty expansion, increased research activity, and the opening of a new facility. RP
