Hi, I'm Diana V. Do, MD, with Retinal Physician, and today I'm joined by Quan Dong Nguyen,MD.Quan, at the retina subspecialty day at the AAO meeting, you're going to be discussing tips for retina specialists when they’re treating patients with uveitis. Can you share with us some of the take-home messages of your presentation?
Dr. Nguyen: Certainly, Diana, it’s a great pleasure for me to share with some of our retina colleagues how we manage patients with uveitis, because many of the patients you see—especially those with posterior uveitis—are usually seen by retina specialists. I’m going to share, for example, that we should not always assume that referred uveitis cases are truly uveitis, but rather look for potential etiologies—for example, drug-induced ocular inflammation, which can be a factor.
Secondly, we also try to avoid excessive testing. For example, many colleagues just order antinuclear antibody and DNA testing on all patients, and that can lead to some misconceptions in this regard. From there, I will go into some additional information about how we can use systemic therapy safely and avoid many of the complications. I’m very much looking forward to that aspect.
In addition, in that session, we will also share some updates on some of the upcoming biologics that are being developed right now and that can be quite promising for inflammatory diseases.
Dr. Do: Thank you again for sharing your expertise. It's always exciting to learn about the new developments in uveitis.
Dr. Nguyen: Thank you, and we look forward to discussing with you. RP
