Hi, I’m Diana V. Do, MD. Welcome to the Retinal Physician video channel. Today, I’m joined by Audina M. Berrocal, MD. Share with us your expertise on vitrectomy systems and cutters and what the busy retina specialists needs to know.
Dr. Berrocal: Well, I think that what really has changed the field has been the dual blade cutter. It cuts both ways and it has the duty cycle—it’s open all the time—so you have a lot of flow. So you can go small gauge and do your surgery efficiently. For kids, when you have really thick vitreous, you can go to 27 gauge and a dual cutter and you can efficiently remove that vitreous. So you're not spending hours and hours like we used to removing the vitreous.
Dr. Do: When you're removing challenging vitreous, are you staining it with any triamcinolone to help visualize it?
Dr. Berrocal: For me, I do, just because I'm a little anal and want to be sure that I remove the hyaloid and I take away all the vitreous that I'm concerned with. I like to start without it, so that I teach myself, and then I stain it, and then I realize how much vitreous I have left.
Dr. Do: Great. Well, thank you so much for sharing your expertise. We really appreciate it. RP
